HockeyHKUS 23-24 Circular No. 3 – Important Notes to Umpires

Dear Umpires,

We hope this message finds you well as the new season has just started. As the Umpires’ Section committee, we would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for your commitment to fair play and upholding the integrity of the game. Your role as umpires is crucial in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all participants.

However, we have received complaint recently regarding certain umpire's inappropriate act during the game. It is reported that one of the umpire colleagues used his phone and Bluetooth headphones during his game. This is completely unacceptable and we have suspended his umpire account for 3 weeks. After this reminder, future suspensions will be significantly longer.

We feel it is essential to address certain aspects related to umpire discipline and performance. The following points outline our expectations and guidelines:

Professional Conduct: We expect all umpires to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and integrity both on and off the field. This includes maintaining a respectful attitude towards players, coaches, fellow umpires, and spectators. Any form of discrimination, harassment, or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated. Use of mobile phones or Bluetooth headphones during games are also prohibited.

Appearance: Umpires are representatives of the sport, and it is important to maintain a neat and professional appearance. Please ensure that your attire is clean, well-fitted, and in accordance with the regulations set forth.

Knowledge and Rules: Umpires are expected to have a thorough understanding of the rules and regulations governing the game. Regular updates and refreshers will be provided to ensure you are up to date with any changes. It is crucial to make accurate decisions and communicate them effectively to all stakeholders.

Communication: Clear and effective communication is vital. Umpires should be assertive, confident, and maintain open lines of communication with players, coaches, and fellow umpires. Timely and accurate signalling, along with concise explanations when required, contribute to a better understanding of decisions made.

Consistency and Fairness: Consistency in decision-making is of utmost importance. Umpires should strive to apply the rules consistently throughout the game, treating all teams and players fairly and equitably. Avoid any bias or favouritism that may compromise the integrity of the game.

We believe that by adhering to these guidelines, we can collectively elevate the standards of umpiring and enhance the overall experience for everyone involved. Your role as an umpire is invaluable, and we trust in your commitment to upholding these principles.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Umpire Committee.

Wishing you all the best for your upcoming matches.

Kind Regards,

Phoebe CHOI
